What is Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is a special day celebrated by many around the world for the women who have given life and love to their children. For some English speakers, they show appreciation for all that they have done for their children.
The History of Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day has been celebrated for centuries, but it wasn’t always the sentimental holiday we know today. The earliest celebrations of mothers date back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. Later, in the 1600s, England celebrated a day called “Mothering Sunday”. On this day, servants and apprentices were given a day off to visit their mothers. Families would also go to church and then enjoy a special dinner together. The first Mother’s Day was celebrated in the United States in 1908. Anna Jarvis created the holiday and wanted it to be a day for families to come together and express their love and appreciation for their mothers. Jarvis’ idea caught on, and Mother’s Day quickly became a national holiday. Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated around the world. In many countries, it is a day to give mothers and grandmothers gifts and flowers and spend time with family and friends.
When is Mother’s Day 2024?
In the United States, Mother’s Day is always celebrated on the second Sunday in May. In 2023, Mother’s Day will be celebrated on May 10th. However, the date varies per country.
The meaning of Mother’s Day
The modern Mother’s Day holiday was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908. Jarvis wanted to honor her own mother, who had passed away a few years earlier. She began a campaign to make Mother’s Day a recognized holiday, and in 1914 the US Congress officially declared it a national holiday. Jarvis always intended Mother’s Day to be a day of personal celebration between mothers and their children. But the holiday became commercialized over time, with greeting cards, flowers, and other gifts becoming the norm.
The Traditions of Mother’s Day
There are many traditions associated with Mother’s Day, but one of the most common is giving mothers flowers. Another popular tradition is taking mothers out for brunch, dinner, or walking together. And of course, many people use Mother’s Day to show their appreciation for all their mothers do for them with a gift such as a bouquet of flowers, a box of chocolates, or a special piece of jewelry. Whatever traditions are chosen to celebrate Mother’s Day, the most important tradition is showing moms how much they are appreciated, loved, and cared for on Mother’s Day.
The modern Mother’s Day
In recent years, the Mother’s Day holiday has become increasingly commercialized. But despite this, it remains a day for celebrating mothers in people’s lives. So whether one buys mom a gift, takes her out for dinner, or simply spends some time with her, families make sure to let them know how much they appreciate all that she does for them.
A mother’s love is unending
There’s no greater love in this world than a mother’s love. It’s unending, always there, and the best feeling in the world. No matter what happens in life, a mother’s love will never end.
